5 Basic Fire Protection Tips from Kaye Contracting: 1. Eliminate Fuels: branches, leaves, gas cans, oil drums, old chord wood all have one thing in common - they will help burn your house down if you don't keep your property clear of them. ANYTHING that can burn probably will in a wildfire. Clear out the flammable fuels and keep them out and you have just reduced your risk substantially. 2. You Need Water: even with today's firefighting chemicals and systems you need water to fight fire. Don't let your garden hose be your only line of defense. Install a yard hydrant, take advantage of any pools, ponds, or put in a 1000gallon tank specifically outfitted for firefighting. 3. Make Things Easy for Firefighters: firefighters will be more effective if you make things easy. Make sure your drive and property access is big enough for their vehicles. Make sure any hydrants or other water sources are brightly painted red and cleared out so they are easy to see. Cooperate with them at all times no matter what. 4. Maintenance: Keep FireWise landscaping properly watered and maintained. Don't let dead plant material pile up. Make sure your hoses are ready, nozzles clean, tanks are full and access is cleared. 5. Use FireWise Principles: new homes can use fire resistant materials. Existing homes can be remodeled with a few key steps that can make all the difference. All structures can be improved if their owners/managers are aware of FireWise principles and stay vigilant about keeping their fire risk low throughout the year.
